Western Australia Wildflowers Trail

FLIGHT DETAILS: Homeport - Perth (flight times to be advised) Welcome to Western Australia. On arrival into Perth, we'll be met and transferred as a group to our hotel, where we can settle in and relax after the flight. Tonight, we gather with fellow travellers for a welcome dinner at the hotel, the perfect start to eight days chasing the state's famous spring wildflower bloom across the Perth region and up the coast. We rest well tonight, because tomorrow we head straight out into the wildflower country surrounding Perth.

Our wildflower journey begins in the Perth region, where the slopes, soils and ancient granite outcrops of the Darling Escarpment create some of the state's finest blooming conditions. Guided by an experienced driver-guide, we'll learn to spot everlastings, orchids, red and green kangaroo paw, banksias, bottlebrush and WA's iconic orange-flowering Christmas trees around Wireless Park, Gingin and Toodyay. A relaxed picnic lunch breaks up the day, with plenty of stops for photos, before we return to the hotel for dinner this evening.

We head north today into the true heart of wildflower country. After a brief morning tea stop in Moora, we arrive at Coalseam Conservation Park in Mingenew for a picnic lunch amid its famous carpets of multicoloured everlastings. We continue on to Mullewa, home of the rare and mysterious wreath flower, whose colours shift unpredictably from year to year, ranging from near-pure white to pink, orange and deep red. We arrive in Geraldton this evening, where we'll enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

We explore Geraldton with a city tour taking in the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, honouring the 645 Australian sailors lost during World War II, and the Beresford Foreshore's striking “Horizon” sculpture. We continue north to the vivid pink hues of Hutt Lagoon and Port Gregory before stopping at Red Bluff for lunch on the way to Kalbarri. After checking in, we enjoy free time, then head to the Kalbarri Skywalk for dinner beneath one of Australia's darkest skies, stargazing through telescopes or the naked eye.

We see Kalbarri National Park from an entirely different perspective on a scenic cruise along the meandering Murchison River, learning about the area's history while spotting incredible flora and fauna best viewed from the water. After lunch and some free time, we walk the Kalbarri Coastal Walk from Island Rock to Natural Bridge, spotting coastal wildflowers along sandstone cliffs plunging over 100 metres to the ocean. We enjoy sundowners at Natural Bridge while watching the sun go down, then return to town for dinner.

We rise early for a sunrise breakfast at the Kalbarri Skywalk before a full day exploring the national park. We visit Nature's Window to spot wattle and fringe lily, Z Bend Lookout for honey myrtle and native cowslip and snail orchids, and Warribanno Chimney for its carpets of everlastings. After a picnic lunch at Ross Graham Lookout, we continue on to Hawks Head and the River Trail down to the water's edge, before returning to our hotel for a wellearned dinner this evening.

We begin the journey back to Perth this morning, stopping at Central Greenough, a beautifully preserved historic settlement showcasing colonial-era Western Australia and lovingly cared for by the National Trust since the 1970s. We enjoy lunch here (at our own expense) before continuing south, arriving back into Perth late this evening after a full day on the road. We celebrate the end of an unforgettable wildflower adventure with a farewell dinner among friends at our hotel tonight, reflecting on eight incredible days.

After breakfast this morning, we're transferred to Perth Airport for our departure flight, bringing our Wildflowers Trail journey to a close. From the granite outcrops of the Darling Escarpment to the carpets of everlastings near Mingenew and the dramatic gorges and coastal cliffs of Kalbarri, we've witnessed Western Australia's spectacular spring bloom at its finest, along with rugged coastline, rich history and unforgettable stargazing.
