Itinerary


Day 1. Sun 14 Sept: Melbourne - St Arnaud - Rupanyup - Horsham

Today we begin our 5 day journey through Victoria’s amazing Wimmera Mallee Silo Art Trail and to also witness the spectacular colours of the salt-pans at Lake Tyrrell, history of the Wimmera Mallee and beautiful scenery of the Grampians. After our group pick up we make our way up past Ballarat to Learmonth for a cuppa and refreshment stop at the 321 Cafe. Up in St Arnaud we call by our first Silo Mural ‘Hope’, then make our way across to Rupanyup for lunch with Bec and crew from the SeednSprout and to take an intriguing look through Wood’s Farming and Heritage Museum. We then take a look through the amazing Murtoa Stick Shed, one of the most unusual and interesting buildings in Australia. From Murtoa we continue into Horsham to view our last silo mural for the day before check in and dinner in the motel restaurant.

Day 2. Mon 15 Sept: Horsham - Sea Lake

Today we farewell Horsham and head up to Dimboola to view ‘Smug’s’ incredible wall mural before moving on to the stunning Arkona silo art again by ‘Smug’ featuring local, Roley Klinge. Next stop is in Nhill for a cuppa and tour of the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre which captures Nhill’s proud aviation history and in particular, it’s tribute to more than 10,000 young men and women who trained at the Nhill RAAF Base during World War II. Up in Rainbow at Yurunga Homestead and garden, we enjoy a light lunch and tour before taking a look at the quirky, colourful and more modern take on silo art at Albacutya. Across in Rosebery we view the silo mural depicting themes that embody the region’s past, present and future. Later this afternoon we arrive at the Sea Lake Silo mural depicting a young girl swinging from a Mallee eucalyptus tree overlooking Lake Tyrrell. Close by is our accommodation where we check in and relax before enjoying dinner at the Royal Hotel.

Day 3. Tues 16 Sept: Walpeup - Silo Murals - Granny Jo’s Farm - Lake Tyrrell

Following breakfast at the Sky Mirror Gallery, we loop the Mallee as we travel across to the Patchewollock Silo artwork before heading up to Walpeup. Here we pay tribute to a 16year old Harold Thomas Belle, and take in his sad story at the Walpeup Silo Mural. Inside the Town Hall our local historian will talk us through the story of the Walpeup Tapestry Mural and history of the town folk before we head across to Granny Jo’s Farm at Nandaly. On arrival we spend time with Mallee farmers Sam and Jo Brady, enjoying a country style lunch amongst Jo’s 3 acre garden and farm animals while listening to their family story and life on the land with cycles of drought and abundance, hope and despair that characterise Mallee farming. From Nandaly it’s back to Sea Lake where we take a look through the Sea Lake Tourist Centre before a freshen up back in our rooms. It’s then time to make our way out to Lake Tyrrell with our guide Julie. At the lake platform we enjoy drinks while viewing the spectacular colours across Lake Tyrrell as the sun sets, before heading back into Sea Lake for dinner at The Juke.

Day 4. Wed 17 Sept: Woomerlang - Nullawil - Brim - Stawell

Following breakfast back at the Sky Mirror Gallery and check out, we travel across to Woomelang to catch up with our local historian before viewing the wall and mobile silo art murals plus take in the history surrounded the Kerosene Tin Shearing Shed. We then head down to Nullawil and stop by the unique Trickbots Metal Art Garden before viewing the silo mural featuring a working dog and his master. A nostalgic tour then lunch awaits with the locals at Auchmore homestead and museum, which houses all the necessities and amenities used by the early pioneers of the district. Our next two stops take in the stunning Brim and Sheep Hills silo murals before heading into Stawell where we check into our overnight accommodation with time to relax before dinner in the Lakeside Restaurant.|

Day 5. Thurs 18 Sept: Grampians NP - Great Western - Melbourne

After breakfast and checkout we set off for our morning up in the Grampians National Park which has us enjoying great views from both the Boroka Lookout and Reed Lookout. From Reed Lookout it’s about a 15min drive to MacKenzie Falls one of the largest waterfalls in Victoria, witness the beauty and power of MacKenzie Falls from a variety of lookouts and walks, which start at the carpark and cater to a range of abilities. After a delightful morning we head down to Seppelts Great Western Winery enjoying lunch followed by a tour of the famous Underground Champagne Cellars then sampling wines at the Cellar Door. This completes our tour through the Wimmera Mallee and Grampians region as we sit back and enjoy the drive back down to Melbourne after our time away with Trade Travel.
