Southern Discovery

Diverse, dramatic, delightful. There’s nowhere in the world quite like south-east Australia, and the region opens up before you board the Great Southern. As each day unfolds on this very special itinerary, you’ll be captivated by Adelaide and the Grampians, uncover the unique culture of Canberra, the spellbinding beauty of the New South Wales coast and Brisbane, all while enjoying the creature comforts and romance of rail.

Day 1: Arrive Adelaide

Welcome to Adelaide. After checking in to your accommodation in the heart of the CBD, there are plenty of opportunities to delve into its food, wine, arts and shopping scenes, and get to know the laid back capital.

Overnight: three nights Mayfair Hotel

Day 2: Barossa Valley

The Barossa may only be an hour by car from Adelaide, but when you’re transported to its lush vineyards and gently rolling hillsides you’ll feel a world away. Famed for its wines, this historic region is home to more than 80 cellar doors, including one of the oldest in the world. Guided by expert vignerons, you’ll explore up to four cellar doors and enjoy a sumptuous two-course lunch on this expertly-crafted all day tour.

Day 3: Leisure day, Adelaide

Today is yours to explore Adelaide and surrounds at your leisure. The elegant capital’s wine culture is matched with a buzzing food scene; find out why in its laneway bars and restaurants. Or perhaps explore its cultural, artistic, or retail life - the choice is yours.

Day 4: Board the Great Southern in Adelaide

Unwind and familiarise yourself with your cabin as the journey begins, before savouring a long lunch onboard with your fellow travellers.

Leaving Adelaide behind, you’ll be transported to the striking Grampians, one of the nation’s most stunning wilderness regions. This magical place is home to ancient sandstone mountains, Indigenous rock art sites, dazzling waterfalls and native fauna including wallabies and echidnas.

Overnight: two nights Great Southern (L,D)

Day 5: Great Southern, Canberra

After a restful night on board, today you’ll discover why Australia’s capital is more than just politics. While the jewel in Canberra’s crown is undoubtedly Parliament House, this compact city is also home to landmarks such as the National Portrait Gallery, Australian War Memorial and the National Arboretum, and today there are plenty of opportunities to delve into Canberra’s art, history and culinary culture.

Day 6: Great Southern, Northern New South Wales Coast and Brisbane

Feel the sand between your toes and the sea breeze in your hair as you enjoy brunch on the beach near Coffs Harbour this morning, with superb views of the Northern New South Wales Coast. Return to the train for more pampering as your rail journey continues to its destination, Brisbane.

Overnight: three nights Adina Apartment Hotel Brisbane (B,L)

Day 7: Brisbane

If you’ve never been to Brisbane before, today’s tour is a perfect introduction to the best of the city – and if you have, it will provide a new look at a familiar place. An all-day tour designed to highlight the diversity of the burgeoning capital, you’ll cruise the Brisbane River, explore bustling Southbank, take in the sweeping views at Mt Coot-tha Lookout, and visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.
