Experience Upper Egypt in style on a this limited-edition, boutique River Nile expedition

Immerse yourself in the spirit of 1920s exploration on this seven-day River Nile journey. Egypt has long fascinated the worldly traveller, and if there were a golden age of travel, it could be traced to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, and further still to the publication of the first Egypt guidebook in 1835. Step back to those times and stay in a plush riverside winter retreat of the Egyptian royal family, enjoy full-board hospitality sailing the Nile on an elegant dahabiya (the Nile houseboat of yore), visit colourful Nubian villages still alive with ancient cultures, and explore must-see ancient sites such as the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Karnak. Retracing the footsteps of the great explorers, this limited edition Upper Egypt adventure shines a light on Nile life like no other.

Day 1

Day 1: Luxor Welcome to Egypt. Arrive at Luxor International Airport and transfer to your hotel. This is simply an arrival day, so you may arrive at any time (note that hotel rooms are generally only available from after midday). An important welcome meeting will be held at 6 pm. Other than that, the day is yours to spend as you please. Perhaps visit Ancient Thebes, the nearby Luxor Museum or the Luxor Temple, all of which are within walking distance. Your accommodation tonight is the superb Sofitel Old Winter Palace Hotel. Built in 1886, it is located on the Nile Corniche, directly across from the river. Day 2

Day 2: Luxor Rise early and head into the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are more than 60 tombs of pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Explore this sprawling and spectacular place where discoveries are still being made. Tutankhamun's final resting place is also found here. After a visit to the three royal tombs and the tomb of Tutankhamen, continue to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, which is set in a spectacular natural amphitheater. See also the Colossi of Memnon – giant statues once part of an impressive colonnade. In the afternoon, visit Karnak, one of the world's most celebrated temple complexes; built over a period of some 200 years, it has elements dating back to 2055 BC. Your guided tour of the temple reveals its finest sections. In the evening, dine in one of the many restaurants of the Old Winter Palace, relax in the beautiful hotel gardens, or perhaps go for a stroll along the Corniche.
